Cloud Native Compiler

Powerful optimizations at a dramatically reduced cost and with 2x -5x faster warm-up

Azul Prime

Use the power of the Cloud for compilation to enable faster code, greater efficiency, and lower costs.

With Cloud Native Compiler and Azul Prime, separate the heavy lifting of compiling byte code to optimized machine code from the actual running of Java applications.

Rapid Warmup to Full-Speed Operation

New JVM instances stream their fleet’s already-compiled code at start-up and install it before real traffic arrives, instead of re-learning it from scratch. Java warm-up is 2x to 5x faster than on standard OpenJDK.

“Performing compilation outside of the JVM using cloud resources is both a major innovation and a valuable new approach for running Java-based applications and infrastructure.”

Deliver even greater agility, with the fastest JVM anywhere

Cloud Native Compiler works with Azul Prime, Azul’s high-performance Java runtime which outperforms other OpenJDK distributions by an average of 37% on the Renaissance Benchmark Suite. It enables customers to elastically scale up and down, re-use previously optimized compilations across connected Java Virtual Machines (JVMs), and improve their performance and startup times. The latest release takes this further: new JVMs now inherit their fleet’s already-compiled code at startup, cutting Java warm-up time by 2x-5x versus standard OpenJDK.

Elastic compilation for all Java apps

Elastic compilation for all Java apps

Decouple Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation from the JVM by provisioning Cloud Native Compiler as a Kubernetes cluster, in the same cluster as the client VMs or in a separate cluster. Cloud Native Compiler is compatible with all Java applications and retains the full advantages of JIT compilation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a new Java instance on OpenJDK run slower right after autoscaling?

Every JVM normally starts cold and has to re-optimize its own code from nothing, even when identical instances elsewhere in the fleet already compiled that same code. Azul Prime’s Cloud Native Compiler removes that penalty by streaming a fleet’s already-compiled code to each new instance at start-up, so it reaches full speed 2x to 5x faster than on standard OpenJDK.

How can I stop over-provisioning cloud capacity just to absorb slow JVM warmup?

Over-provisioning is a workaround, not a fix. Cloud Native Compiler addresses the root cause: new instances inherit their fleet’s compiled code the moment they start, so teams can scale down the idle capacity they were carrying to mask warmup lag.

Can I share JIT compilation across a fleet instead of repeating it in every JVM?

Yes. Cloud Native Compiler already caches the compiled code a fleet produces in a central service. Its newest capability streams that code preemptively to every new instance at start-up, instead of each JVM recompiling the same hot methods independently.

How do I get consistent latency across a horizontally scaled Java fleet after a deploy?

Consistency after a deploy depends on how fast new instances warm up. With Azul Prime’s Cloud Native Compiler, new instances install their fleet’s accumulated optimizations before real traffic arrives, rather than running a rough first minute of degraded latency.

Can I improve Java warmup performance without changing application code?

Yes.
